Ready to plan your unforgettable proposal in one of France’s most scenic coastal destinations? Let’s dive in!
Driving is the most flexible way to reach Etretat. The trip from Paris takes about 2.5 – 3 hours via the A13 highway. It’s a straightforward drive, and having a car gives you more freedom to explore the area or stop at places along the way. There’s public parking in Etretat, though it can fill up quickly on weekends or during peak season.
There’s no direct train to Étretat, but you can take a train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Le Havre or Bréauté-Beuzeville. From Le Havre, there’s a regional bus that goes to Étretat in about an hour. From Bréauté, a shorter bus ride also connects to the town. Total travel time is around 3 to 3.5 hours.
For the more adventurous among you, the long-distance trail GR21 (Grande Randonnée 21) runs along the Alabaster Coast between Le Havre and Le Tréport. The section from Le Havre to Étretat is around 35 km and follows a more inland route. After Étretat, the trail continues along the cliffs, offering wide sea views as it winds its way toward Le Tréport.
While it’s perfectly possible to visit Etretat as a day trip from Paris, staying overnight is worth considering, especially if you want to enjoy the town at a slower pace. With a bit more time, you can walk the cliff paths at both sunrise and sunset, explore the Jardin d’Etretat, visit the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Garde, and stroll through the charming streets filled with galleries, cafés, and local shops. The beach is perfect for a quiet morning walk or a relaxed afternoon by the water. Spending the night also gives you more flexibility for a proposal or photoshoot, especially if you’re hoping for the best light or fewer people around. Lastly, it gives you more flexibility to deal with Normandy’s quick-changing moody weather. As the famous French joke goes, in Normandy the weather is nice multiple times a day!
Down on the beach
Framed by the iconic rock formations on either side, the beach offers a striking contrast between sea, sky, and stone. The famous Falaise d’Aval can be the backdrop for your photos. The beach can be fairly busy in the peak summer season but is practically empty in the autumn and winter. Bordering the beach is the boardwalk with its charming shops and cafés.
Clifftop near the chapel
Next to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Garde is a wide open space with views in both directions along the coast. It’s usually quieter than the main viewpoints. Here we have the perfect vantage point if you want to capture the famous cliffs Aiguille and Porte d’Aval in your proposal photos from up high. You can walk here in about 15 minutes from the town center on a steep uphill path (bring comfy shoes).
Falaise d’Aval and the Arch
Up above the Falaise d’Aval you have a beautiful view towards the town of Etretat. In the distance you can see the chapel and the Falaise d’Amont on one side, while on the other side you have Falaise de Mannemontporte. This side tends to see a bit more foot traffic, as it is the beginning of the walking route along the cliffs westwards towards the golf courses. If you follow the coastal paths beyond the main viewpoints, you’ll find less-visited spots with wide views of the sea. The path is open year-round. It is easily accessible from the boardwalk by the beach and not too steep, though it can (and will) get windy.
Jardin d’Etretat
These artistic gardens overlook the sea and offer a more curated, peaceful setting. Sculpted greenery, modern sculptures, and tucked-away benches create a more intimate feel, blending art and nature in a thoughtful way. Winding paths lead to viewpoints over the cliffs, offering a different perspective from the raw coastal scenery below. It’s a quiet space, ideal for slower moments and unique photos. There’s an entry fee, and opening hours vary by season, so it’s best to plan ahead.
You don’t need elaborate props—Etretat’s landscape does the work. Some couples bring flowers, a handwritten letter, or plan a quiet picnic afterward. Others book a dinner nearby to celebrate. Whatever suits you, the most important part is keeping the moment true to you both.
A proposal in Etretat doesn’t require a complicated plan, but a bit of preparation can make a big difference, especially if you’re hoping to keep it a surprise and get beautiful photos. Working with a photographer in advance helps things go more smoothly. I can help you choose the best location based on light and tide, coordinate timing, and even blend in as a tourist if you want the moment captured discreetly.
It is best if you reach out an inquire about your date as soon as possible, so that I can save the date for you and organize my travel to Etretat. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will nail down all the details of the surprise. I will help you and guide you step by step through the process and answer all of your questions. Usually, I stay discrete and take photos from further away until you fall on one knee and ask the question. Once you do, I will approach you and we will continue with your engagement session. We can walk around to capture a few different spots and ensure variety in your photo gallery.
